Joris recently committed two examples of such graphical macros designed for commutative diagrams (arrow-with-text). If you are running from SVN or 1.99.3 is already out, do what I describe above and select arrow-with-text. You can snap to grid by activating the grid. You can resize your canvas with A-left, A-down, etc.

If you search the scheme code (S-F1) for arrow-with-text, you'll see how it's done. There are many other examples there.

Someone could try implementing curved arrows next ;)
