Hi all,

Although the share of users who can do this may be higher among Linux users,
I wouldn't expect it from an avarage user. Even if they can do it, they may
not want to bother just to try out a new application.

Yes, and moreover, there are several projects to populate Linux, and we
should expect new users to Linux. Darcy should know that, in China, there are
decrees to replace Windows by Linux-based OSes in governments.

For GNU/Linux, I do think it is important to maintain a debian package and
submit it to the official debian repo.

Once GNU TeXmacs becomes an official debian package, it will benefit all
debian derivatives.

This would be great, indeed, but Debian has removed guile-1.8 several years
ago already.

There are also some problems about maintenance. I once came to the Debian
channel on IRC, and they said that our maintenance of deb packages is very
non-standard. For example, it is not properly configured to produce debug
symbols (dbgsym packages), and there are various hand-written configurations
which should be replaced by environment variables.

And it might as well be better to incorporate them into downstream distros such as
Deepin and UOS. It is not for technical reasons, but for advertisement, especially if
they would include it as a default "scientific editor".

Best wishes,
Frank

Dear Darcy,

Maybe it is also better to try to publish our builds into repos of
mainstream Linux distros. In particular, maybe we could try to suggest Deepin
Linux and UOS to incorporate TeXmacs into their official markets.

Best,
Frank
