We use the same ligature & kerning algorithm as TeX.
But it maybe that the Metafont ports of the postscript fonts
do not hard-encode ligature/kerning information into the fonts.

You should take a look at the files in
$TEXMACS_PATH/progs/fonts
in order to understand how the fonts are mapped. See also
