This sounds more like a problem with your X server than with texmacs. Do other X11 clients work, for example xterm? If not, it is a problem with your ~/.Xauthority file. This can happen, for example, on a laptop when you start X11 and then change your hostname by connecting to a different network.
The remedy in this case is to remove the ~/.Xauthority file (plus 'touch ~/.Xauthority' to create a bogus one) and restart X11.
