Problem solved :-), after a few other issues appeared some further
investigation discovered that a package was missing. On Debian sid
maxima is split into a maxima package and a maxima-share package. While
it runs without the maxima-share package some curious behaviours like
above happen. Now that the installation is complete and upgraded it
works very nicely :-). Thanks for the help, Bob.
