If you are not on Linux, the maxima_detect shell script needs the
following two changes:
a) #/bin/sh -> #/bin/bash
b) grep -> ggrep
I see from the cvs log that the last change commited was
#!/bin/bash -> #!/bin/sh

Such changes always fix some systems but break others :-(
I now came to understand from several people that the right way to
make these things portable is to always use /bin/sh and avoid
any bash-specific features. What is wrong about using /bin/sh
on Solaris?

type -p
is bash-specific. We can change it back to
which
but then we screw cygwin, see Revision 1.3 in cvs

From b), I suppose some option used is specific to GNU grep. I don't have a non-GNU grep at hand; is it possible to do everything we need here using only generic grep options?
