If you were using TeX/LaTeX, the way to insert sans-serif
(or any other "non-standard" style, for that matter) into
math is to go into text mode. Same thing works in TeXmacs.
For example,
<with|mode|math|a<rsup|2>+b<rsup|2>=<with|mode|text|<with|font-family|ss|E>><rsup|33>+c<rsup|2>>
Does this do what you want?

Thanks. You just confirmed my problem. The ffl are the rendering of
epsilon.
So it seems that we have a font problem, at least in Debian related
distributions.
