I too found the speed too slow until I discovered three things that
seem to reduce the overhead from organizing the document into pages.
The most significant of these was to go back to the default
Document->Page->Type->Papyrus --- I had been using "paper", which as
far as I can tell causes TeXmacs to show the document as it will be
organized into pages. I now select "Papyrus" until I need to do my
final layout and format for printing, and then switch to "Paper" and
take one look _without_editing_anything_. I can work on an old slow
computer (900 MHz) with only one moderate delay when I switch to
"paper", despite having a 113-page document with lots of floating
figures (see preview at http://www.lulu.com/content/1094615 --- by the
way, the TeXmacs->lulu.com process is _really_ easy if you don't
import anything other than images from non-TeXmacs sources (i.e.,
don't import files from xfig if you want to use lulu)).

Other things that speed up TeXmacs include breaking a long document
into chapters and using Document->Part (or whatever it is), but this
is a relatively new feature that's not yet in the "fink" edition for
MacOS, and may not be available on the XP version either, for all I
know. Also selecting Document->Page->(breaking) Algorithm->Sloppy
(until you are ready for your final printout --- then switch back to
Professional) is an option, but the page layout is so bad I'm just as
happy to view the document without pagination at all (using Papyrus,
as in the paragraph above).

I hope this helps,
Dave Wonnacott
