I believe there are both the options - one to insert the image into the
document, the other to link the image from the document.
Insert -> Image -> Link image...
Insert -> Image -> Insert image...
is physically inserted inside the document,
thus you don't need to care about the original
image file anymore.
With "Link image", you create only a link,
but I guess that relative paths are allowed.
