I can't figure out why. There's really only one page in equation.dvi.

Figured it out. I had an old ~/.dvipsrc that specified letter size 
paper. Deleting this file solved the problem. Apologies for the false 
alarm. Equation Editor works great.

Thus it seems this problem is related to an obscure option
remaing in your .dvipsrc (or in some similar location).
