Actually, writing $\above 1 sim $ does'nt work, you have to write
$ \above \sim
and then move over "sim" with the up arrow. But it works very well.

You see <math|<above|1|sim>>
Hence you can input this directly using $\above 1 sim $
I am not sure why the texmacs primitive differs from the latex one.
