[TeXmacs] tab->space conversion

when a text file is opened in TeXmacs,
it seems that a tab character is converted to 8-spaces.
Is it possible to change this 8 to another value ?
(I prefer 4-spaces rather than 8-spaces.)
Is there some variable that controls the tab-space
conversion ?
