I just tried with 1.0.7.3 and yes - it won't edit. I'll see if I can make it work in 1.0.7.3

The best I can suggest (if you are not a windows user) in the meantime is to checkout the latest SVN trunk and build it, and then run it in-place (without make-install) using something like this wrapper that I use:

export TEXMACS_PATH=$HOME/Projects/texmacs/texmacs/trunk/src/TeXmacs/

exec $TEXMACS_PATH/bin/texmacs "$@"
