I just figured out how to do this.
Insert this into your ~/.TeXmacs/progs/my-init-texmacs.scm (or make a new
file like that)

(kbd-map ("R 1 ." (if (no-name?)
(make-session "r" "default"))))
(kbd-map ("R 2 ." (if (no-name?)
(make-session "r" "default2"))))
(kbd-map ("R 3 ." (if (no-name?)
(make-session "r" "default3"))))
---
Then, if you type "R1." (without the quotes) you get the default R session.
if you type "R2." you get a new session, session number 2. You can get back
to it with R2.
"R3." gives you a third session...
You can, of course, use different shortcuts, and only use one session.
