In the example above I've included the calculation in the body so
that I can see what goes on.
It seems that<mod|1w|1fn> isn't allowed, and in fact that plus and
minus on tmlen's makes a longer tuple anyway...

Anyone know a way to achieve what I'm trying to do?

Be careful that 'fn' is a rubber length;
you probably want to use 'em' instead.

Thanks for that tip. I thought only fn* was rubber.
