* means multiply (as in '2*x')
space means 'apply', that is, function application (as in 'sin x')

You may not (want to) follow these conventions,
but this will make your formulas semantically incorrect
(e.g. if you would copy and paste them in a computer algebra session,
then they won't be interpreted in the intended way).
