Well, I have to say that at least with the current color combinations,
I feel the version with borders that you proposed first looked better.
Or maybe it is that the background has changed and now it is light,
like the section headings. It would be good to be able to see the
alternatives side by side.

I think part of the problem (which probably cannot be fixed with CSS?)
is that the boxes inside the white main box don't reach up to the
sides. That also creates some noise. But I may be wrong. In any case,
since a lot of trial and error and speculation is involved and not
many people are chiming in, I will give further feedback out of the
list.
