 there's an option that reads "open in low resolution"
which is not checked so I guess it's already in high definition.

However the text is still blurry.

to Check that it worked look at the finder info panel for the texmacs app, it should indicate whether the app support high res or not. usually the system caches info, you have to rename the package to force a recaching. or something of this kind.

I tried the trick but it does not seem to work.

I also tried various combinations of DPI and shrinking factor
however none of them really make the text any sharper as it should
on this screen.

I will try to test this TeXmacs behavior under retina, as far as I understand by loking into internet you also have to tweak the Info.plist file in the TeXmacs app bundle:

Open Info.plist with a text editor, and add the following to the end of the file, just before the ≪/dict> line:
<Key>NSHighResolutionCapable</key>
<String>True</string>

Also tweaking the Document->Font->DPI parameter should give interesting results. Please report your findings to the list.
