I have been using 1.0.7.21 (on OSX 10.8.4 created from the .dmg file)  to update an extensive set of documents created under an older version (1.0.6.15).

I am finding though that when I take the documents back to the 1.0.6.15 there has been a revamping of the format for bracketing, parenthesizing etc in math-mode.

with lots of "arounds" occurring in the code.

Is there a way to "disable" this `arounding' process?  Or some workaround?

(My problem is that my institution has an old server on which the 1.0.6.15 version is installed that apparently "cannot be updated"

according to them, so I am stuck with using this version.)
