you can also use variants that are accessed by pressing tab one or more times
in math mode % is accessed using the % sign followed by 8 (!) tabs
keypresses.
in displayed formula, $ is entered by pressing $ tab. In inline formula this
exits the inline formula...
One possibility is to define macros (for instance in your file header):
<assign|%|%>
<assign|$|$>
and you would enter \% enter or \$ tab enter
