Perhaps the first press of a magic key like % should emit a status line message to remind that SHIFT-F5 prefix will permit direct entry of the literal character.

In the Maxima Plugin for Windows, if I use "Mathematical Input" mode, I can get to the % sign by doing tab many times. How can I make the % sign the 1st variant.
