Hi,
texmacs is one of several CAS's that I'm currently evaluating. Here's
feeback of my initial troubles and annoyances. Prior to posting this,
I checked the document at `Help>Projects>Plans for the future', and
preformed web searches but found none of the issues discussed. That
seems suspicious to me as the issues can be expected to be confronted
by most as part of their first impression of the software. Searching
the mailing list archive proved burdensome in that it seems one can
only search one month's entries at a time.
+ How do I change default color scheme / skin?
+ my eyes hurt from black on white themes, so my default install is
a dark grey-on-black theme.
+ readability of many toolbar items was awful (black on grey) at
install, and only improved after manually toggling the gtk/qt
theme (in my case, using lxappearance) to a light theme.
Aftwerwards, only some elements were sensitive to further changes
of the system theme.
+ tooltips, menus: theming changes only the background color, not
the foreground color. This is also true for the selection of
many but not all screens that pop up when selecting a button on
a toolbar, eg. for inserting a negation. An example of one that
does seem to theme properly is the one for inserting a fraction.
+ toolbars: theme has no effect. This is also true for popup
windows, eg. in response to `C-x k'.
+ What is keybinding to toggle between documents / sessions / help
screens?
+ the menu drop-down selection `go' seems the only way to navigate
between sessions, and between pages in the documentation / help
pages.
+ What is the keybinding to access the menu? (ie emacs F10)
+ How does one split the texmacs screen to display two documents
side-by-side? (ie. emacs `C-x 3')
+ I wanted to have the tutorial or reference manual beside a scratch
session.
+ Installing texmacs in debian
+ This part I'm posting just FYI of what seems to be the current
state of the debian packaging.
+ How I successfully installed texmacs
+ Manually download deb files from the debian wheezy (oldstable)
repository. This was necessary because debian now requires
repository files to be secured, which wasn't the case with wheezy,
ie. I could not figure out how to have apt accept addition of
those repositories in my sources.list file.
+ texmacs_1.0.7.15-2_amd64.deb
+ texmacs-common_1.0.7.15-2_all.deb
+ texmacs-extra-fonts_0.2_all.deb
+ Install dependencies from jessie (stable)
+ apt-get install guile-1.8-libs groff texlive-math-extra
+ Manuall install deb packages in the following sequence
+ dpkg -i texmacs-common_1.0.7.15-2_all.deb
+ dpkg -i texmacs_1.0.7.15-2_amd64.deb
+ Failure: could not install
+ dpkg -i texmacs-extra-fonts_0.2_all.deb
