My understanding is that Emacs users tend to extend Emacs to an "operating system" (such as browsing webs and brewing coffee), while vi users tend to introduce vi-like keybindings to other environments.

My understanding of why TeXmacs was inspired by Emacs is that  Texmacs uses (1) lisp/scheme as it extending language, similar to Emacs, (2) the Emacs-style keybinding.
