I encountered similar problem with pdf files on a colleague's computer (no TeXmacs involved, and this is important, since it is not the TeXmacs software, it was LaTeX…). I was using MAC computer and everything was fine for me. He was using Windows, and on screen it was bad, partly because of lack of resolution and partly because he used acrobat reader. He had to change on windows some settings that were concerned with how fonts are treated and it became better. So I suggest that you check with your students this possibility. Unfortunately I’m not a “Windows guy” so I cannot remember what were the specific changes in settings on Windows
