Thanks Ingolf.

I used Phil packages several times and they are really useful. But, sometimes, I compile the last version of TeXmacs to see some new features. And with ubuntu 20.04 I wonder how i can do that.

I've got another question : what is the difference between the tgz executable texmacs on the website and the appimage version ? More generally, what are the differences between an appimage and an old tgz ?

And, at last, I really appreciate apps that integrate nicelly in my OS, with updates and so on. Appimage doesn't seem to allow this.

Best regards

Marc

Thanks for that. The disadvantage of AppImage is that it does not upgrade automatically.

Hi,

the AppImage version of Phillipe Joyez works like a cham. [1]

You can find it at https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/slowphil:/texmacs-devel/AppImage/

Installation instructions: [2]

1.) Download texmacs-latest-x86_x64.AppImage [3]

2.) Find the file you downloaded on your drive (usually in the Downloads folder). Its file name starts with texmacs and ends in .AppImage

3.) Right click the file and mark it as executable in the Permissions tab.

4.) Double click the file to start and use TeXmacs in Ubuntu 20.04  (first start takes a bit to initialize. it runs very fast, tough.)

You can copy that file to any location on your computer and start it by double clicking from the Files app or with the name "GNU TeXmacs" from the launcher.  [4]

Best wishes,

Ingolf

[2] Note, this does not work for ARM-based computers like the RaspberryPi.

[3] Direct link https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/slowphil:/texmacs-devel/AppImage/texmacs-latest-x86_64.AppImage

[4] It is sorted in under the letter G in the alphabetic list. I'm writing this because I did look for it under T as in TeXmacs and thought it had not installed properly.

Hi,

Do you have a solution now? If a new version of TeXmacs won't come in the near future, I guess that it is better to have a deb build for Ubuntu 20.04.

By the way, we can also consider a snap (https://snapcraft.io/) build, which is universal to all Linux distros.

Frank

Hi !

Did someone compile teXmacs under ubuntu 20.04 ? If so, how did you manage : with libqt4 or libqt5 ?

And since libqtcore4 isn't available, one can't install deb packages from ubuntu 18.04 or 19.10. Note that evenwith a libqtcore4 package installe"d by hand, i couldn't install any of the different deb packages of TeXmacs.

But, the binary version on the website does work.

Hope you're all OK.

Regards.

Marc
