The SPACE I think means "function application" while * is the multiplication.

When writing in math mode, we have to put a * or SPACE in between two math symbols.
What is the correct way, should I use * or SPACE ?
Should I put one of these in between all math symbols ? E.g., in an _expression_ like
x_1 x_2
should I put a * or SPACE beween x_1 and x_2 ?
Thanks
