I would attempt by copying the definition of section and assigning the macros that compose it to new names---so you compose a "chapter appendix" macro.

But this is only an idea, I did not try it out.

I wonder how to make appendices section-like instead of chapter-like in books, i.e. an appendix of a chapter?
