Hi Kostas,
I don't think this particular command exists, but the definition of the
equation environment in env-math.ts shows that the labelled equation is
produced by <equation-lab | equation | label >. You can use the command
<equation-lab | | > directly in your document and type whatever you like as a
label—references to equations will work normally. Or you can redefine
<equation> to call <equation-lab | | > but use a different macro than the
default one (<the-equation>) to produce the label.
If you instead need to modify the _rule_ for producing the equation label,
you can look into <the-equation>: it uses the macro <display-equation | > to
format the counter <counter-equation>. This is where you would specify, e.g.,
that the label uses roman instead or arabic numbers.
