The weird blank field is I think the box which contains the rotated text, and the editor is set up so that you can type where the original text is ( and it is blank because the text is rotated). Try and click on the icon with the "flipped page", just left of the "Rotate" text, on the lower line of the menus (let me know if what you see is the same I am posting in the screenshot). Then click again to see the rotated text. Let me know if it works.
