In addition to the answer by Basile, the menu item Preferences -> Mathematics -> Semantic Editing exists only in one of the two menu "modes": when "Complex actions" (again in Preferences) is set to "Through the menus", not when it is set to "Through popup windows".

The two modes differ under several respects---I go by memory, I did not check the details before writing this message.

I want to turn on semantic editing. The documentation (Menu->Help->Mathematical Formulas) points me to Menu -> Preferences -> Mathematics -> Semantic Editing.

The Preferences window does not have the Mathematics tab. I see the following four tabs: General, Keyboard, Export, Other.

I tried invoking it with cursor in both Math and Text mode.

Am I doing something wrong, or is the documentation incorrect?
