Thanks for the advice.  I will read the manual and the book again to see what I miss.  Although the first alternative seems rather straightforward, placing the cursos inside the environment is tricky in a system of equations.

Equation environments can be numbered by choosing the “Numbered” item in the “Focus” menu. But the cursor has to be inside the environment for this to work. 
Alternatively you can click on the “IV” button in the focus bar (which is the lowest of the three toolbars you see in the GUI). Again, for this to work, the cursor has to be in the equation environment.

Give also a look at the forum (http://forum.texmacs.cn/) for many answers to common questions.

Otherwise, it will just add the code to the document. 
It’s possible to create a shortcut and add it to your my-init-texmacs.scm  if you use this a lot.
