Well, the manual is free because Joris wrote it and choose to make it free,
while Jolly Writer is now accessible via PDF and Joris asks for a voluntary
contribution to support his work with the program. So I do not see why you
see a problem with one but not the other. Writing all this documentation for
TeXmacs required anyway a lot of time.

Actually is my opinion that Joris should ask for contribution to the project
right at the moment of the download of the program like other open source
projects do. For example yesterday I downloaded Fontforge and essentially
they ask you (rightly) to contribute via Paypal very explicitly before you
even can access the download button.
