I have the impression that this problem is due to
non-standard configurations of certain keyboards under X.
Indeed, for certain configurations, certain modifier keys
like "scroll lock" are considered to be "pressed" by default.

So please check this hypothesis by uncommenting line 62 in x_loop.cc.
If I am right that pressing "a" would yield something like
"Mod2-a" or "Mod5-a" instead of "a".

By the way, another problem has been noticed to me: with the static
binary distribution on Mandrake 8.2, Nicolas Girard got the message
