How come your maxima is in /usr/local/libexec? Do you have another one
besides the fink-installed one?

What am I missing?

I am sorry for your choice but the Mac it is a bad choice for this
porting.
Frank, please ignore idiot remarks like this.
If you want to continue with your porting on the Mac, you need to
install Tcl/Tk.
There are several packages that have the status of "recommended" for
maxima and for texmacs to use all their possibilities. They are not
necessary for a basic functioning, so they are not automatically
installed when texmacs and maxima are installed. You can get a list of
such packages using
apt-cache unmet
or by looking in the package descriptions, i.e. the maxima-*.info and
texmacs-*.info files.
For maxima, tcltk is a "recommended" package, so you should do "fink
install tcltk".
