The standard mouse button emulation in X11 on the Mac is

alt-click = button 2
cmd-click button 3

This is not only for the trackpad, but also for the classic one-button (or rather zero-button) Apple mouse.

There is a preference setting in X11 "Emulate three button mouse" that needs to be active for this to work.
