I did what you suggested. Activating debugging of events produces a huge amount of output. I scanned it, and it doesn't seem very useful.

Activating keyboard debugging produces the following:
(I typed C-k, followed by "Greek $a-tab")

Keyboard] Pressed C-k at 0
Keyboard] Pressed G at 0
Keyboard] Pressed r at 0
Keyboard] Pressed e at 0
Keyboard] Pressed e at 0
Keyboard] Pressed k at 0
Keyboard] Pressed space at 0
Keyboard] Pressed $ at 0
Keyboard] Pressed a at 0
Keyboard] Pressed tab at 0
Keyboard] Pressed tab at 0
Keyboard] Lost focus at 0
Keyboard] Lost focus at 0
Keyboard] Got focus at 0
Keyboard] Lost focus at 0
Keyboard] Got focus at 0

Can you provide more context (I do not have an Open Solaris to try and on my
Mac the X11 version works fine as far as I can see).
Go to the Tools menu and activate "Debugging Tools", a new top level menu
"Debug" appears.
You can then choose to monitor various subsystem via messages on the console
(keyboard and events shoud be fine).

Thanks

I compiled the ordinary X version on OpenSolaris. The tab key worked fine in
1.0.7.5 and 6.

As of today's version (20100909) Tab key does produce variants on MacOSX, Qt

Which version are you compiling, on which system?

Just a note to say that in the SVN version of September 8 the tab key doesn't
produce variants in math mode, as it is supposed to.
