I just stumbled upon this message. If you are still interested, you
have to recompile setting

use_side_tools = true

in src/src/Graphics/Gui/widget.cpp

However, be warned that this is experimental and will likely crash
your texmacs if you try to embed some widgets in the sidebar, like
texmacs-input, which will crash if you try to close the document it
contains or upon closing all other documents. You'll also need to
define the widget texmacs-side-tools in your scheme code to be
whatever you want.
