I was using TeXmacs 0.3.5.13, but have just upgraded to .14: no joy either. 
Same problem.

Guile (version 1.4) runs fine from the command line. I also compiled the 
tortoise tutorials from the Guile Web page, and they work flawlessly. I am 
really puzzled---I see no reason why it should get stuck there.
