the version is 1.01.18 under Mac OS X installade via fink with 
ghostscript 6.01
version under linux is 1.1.8
I confirm that the same figure in a new document appears prefectly...
I reopened the original document and the figure....
but now everything seems to work the figure is correctly inserted....
By the way there is no other message....
just in the status bar appears file 'figure.jpg'not found...
Well it's a mystery
I will try to reproduce it on mac os X at home this evening
