I have to type a passage that must be 150 words or less. Is there some
mode of usage that will display tne number of words typed so far?

In emacs on Unix, I might just do

   M-x shell-command-on-region RET wc -w


I did find a feature in OpenOffice (File / Properties / Statistics)
which gives a number of useful features. If you are thinking of doing
something similar for TeXmacs, here they are:

# of pages
# of tables
# of graphics
# of OLE objects
# of paragraphs
# of words
# of characters
# of lines
