I am not sure exactly why the star is necessary, but it is.
It does mean "multiply the original size by X to get the new size".
Without "*" the tag does mean "this is the new size" so you should add
after any number a measuring unit, like "par", "cm", etc ... (I don't
remember exactly which unit works: just try).
