It's true, but there is a way to turn a cell in a table into multiline mode. To do this, put
i think your looking for "table" for this. (the little box on the
toolbar) it'll just be a 1 by 1 table.
I already tested this, but i think is not a very good solution:
When i paste a text with some Carriage Return characters in the table, a new row for each CR is created.
the cursor in the cell, then the menu "Table" should appear. Then, choose :

Table/Special call properties/Hyphenation/Multi-paragraph
]]
After this, when you put Carriage Return characters in the cell, you don't have a new
row for each CR. Also, don't forget that two kinds of table are available :
[[
Insert/Table/Plain tabular: inserts a table with no visible borders ;
Insert/Table/Plain block: inserts a table with visible borders ;
]]
