Hi again,
I am also trying to find about the best default font settings.
The last days, I managed to find the mftrace program which allowed
me to build a Type 1 package for the EC fonts. This means that
we now have several options for the default font settings:
1) Use Type 1 fonts. Advantages: journals usually require Type 1
fonts, because they are better supported by Pdf-related
software like Acroread. Also, no more need to run Metafont.
2) Use bitmap fonts. Advantages: this solution is better optimized,
at least for the moment. Loading my last 37 page math paper on
a 2.4GHz machine took me 2secs with bitmap fonts and 20secs
with Type 1 fonts. Also, Metafont bitmaps remain slightly
superior in quality.
What do you think? A third option would be to spend further time
on the font handling and generate a cache for the bitmaps of
the Type 1 fonts. Not sure that I will have time for this though...
Best wishes, Joris
