Some other thoughts on the approach to this labeling situation:
A colleague suggested it might be possible to always grab the last input
label sent by Maxima and not display it until an input cell is edited
and run then display it on the cell that is run. That way there would
never be duplicate labels and the input and output numbers would match.
I don't know how difficult that would be but if this approach is too
difficult then would it be possible just of suppress input labels
completely and just display maxima] or some other prompt for input
cells? The ouput cell labels are useful at times so it would be good to
retain them and no problems with ducplication or wrong numbers can occur
with them anyway. The ability to do things like float(%o10) is handy now
and again.
