How can I make an underscore symbol (_) ? Even if I change to american

Yours,

Outside of math-mode I never had any problems to create underscore with
the appropriate key combination (S-hyphen), in spanish, german and uk
layouts -- check your xmodmap configuration.
In general, to insert characters whose associated keystrokes have a
specific meaning for TeXmacs in some mode, such as $ or \ in any mode or
_ in math-mode, you prefix the keystroke with S-F5 (Shift-F5).
I am not the OP but I have a similar question. How to enter * (asterix
symbol) in math mode? S-F5 technique is not working for * symbol. But
it is working for _, $ symbols.
Thanks
