Well, from my poor experience, I recommend:
TeXmacs+Maxima[1], a powerfull toolkit to simbolic calculations,
numeric, power series, statistics, etc !!.
TeXmacs+GnuPlot[2], to graphics.
and TeXmacs+YaCAS[3], to program numeric algorithms.
