The most powerful free computer algebra systems are maxima and axiom.
Maxima is more practically oriented; axiom requires a higher level of
mathematical culture, but its design is extremely beautiful from the
mathematical point of view.
By the way, TeXmacs interface to maxima is more advanced and reliable than
to axiom (of course, if your platform is not Windows; under Windows, this
interface is completely broken, and WinTeXmacs is very much out of date in
general).
Just imho.
