i am on the "bad" computer, only check this one,

the desktop environment is gnome 2.22.1, and i think the window manager is
metacity, and texmacs is 1.0.6.11. These are all from ubuntu 8.04's default.

I installed texmacs from ubuntu 8.04 source.

I was unable to reproduce the problem with TeXmacs 1.0.6.14 and metacity 2.18.5 on my Fedora 7 system; it seems to be a bug in TeXmacs 1.0.6.11.
