I resolved the problem: texmacs looks for the pk version of ecrm10 on startup because freetype is not configured properly.

My question is: does texmacs *really* need a pk version of ecrm10 or ecrm11? Can't it use the type1 (pfb) version of these fonts that exist on my system?Menu entry:
Edit->Preferences->Printer->Font type->Type 1 only
But to do this, you must first be able to start TeXmacs once...
