You want to remove the limits under the big symbol,
or on the contrary put limits under the big symbol?
In order to remove limits, you may put the symbol inside a group (M-r).
In order to add limits, you may use above (A-a) and below (A-b).
For integrals, rather use S-F5 L I as explained in the documentation.
Not infinitely clean, but it works...
